Combat is what Beast of Reincarnation lives or dies on, and the early signs are strong. This guide breaks down how it works and how to get good at it.

Based on confirmed systems and developer interviews ahead of the August 4, 2026 launch. We’ll deepen it with hands-on detail at release.

The core: timing, not tempo

Game Freak describes demanding, technical combat, with a dodge-and-parry rhythm compared to Sekiro (and visual/mechanical nods to Nier: Automata and Black Myth: Wukong). The throughline is timing. You’re not trying to out-speed enemies; you’re trying to read them — recognise the attack, answer it cleanly, and punish.

Parrying

A well-timed parry deflects an incoming strike and opens the enemy to a counter. Against tough foes, the parry is your main route to real damage. Learn each enemy’s wind-up and treat the parry as offence, not just survival.

Dodging

A dodge slips an attack and repositions you. Use it to escape unparryable moves, to reset spacing, and to set up Emma’s vine attacks from a better angle. Read more in Parrying, Dodging & Difficulty.

Fighting as a duo

You always have a partner. Koo is commanded in real time to harass, pin or stagger enemies, creating the openings Emma exploits. The best players think in two characters at once — Koo destabilises, Emma punishes. Ignoring the dog leaves damage on the table.

Emma’s vines

Emma’s plant powers give her reach and mobility a sword lacks. Use vines to close distance, strike from unexpected angles, and control space against larger malefacts. They turn combat from a duel into something more three-dimensional.

Build to your style

Combat isn’t one-size-fits-all. Through skill trees, gear and spirit stones you can lean ranged, stealthy or aggressive. And every boss you fell grants a captured power via sealing, steadily expanding your options.

Practical tips

  • Practise on elites. Use roaming mini-bosses to rehearse before story bosses.
  • Stay mobile against swarms. Swarm malefacts punish standing still — keep moving and use area attacks.
  • Respect the wind-up. Most deaths come from greed. Wait for the opening you earned.

Frequently asked questions

How does combat work in Beast of Reincarnation?

It's deliberate, timing-based action. You read enemy attacks and respond with dodges and parries, then punish the openings while commanding Koo and using Emma's vine attacks.

Is the combat like Sekiro?

Game Freak has compared its dodge-and-parry cadence to Sekiro, with Nier: Automata and Black Myth: Wukong also cited. It emphasises timing over button-mashing, but aims to stay approachable.

Can you play Beast of Reincarnation aggressively or at range?

Yes. Skill trees, gear and spirit stones let you build Emma for ranged, stealthy or aggressive playstyles.
